15.11.2007 - NJ, USA (first letter) ... ... To Be Continued

"My name is Elna Robbins, in New Jersey, USA. I found your web site and was astonished to realize that you had so much of my grandmother's genealogy spelled out.

My grandmother was Eva (Yohevet) Millis, born in Romania to David Gershon Millis, who was the son of Moshe Millis. Eva was the third child of David from his first marriage; her mother died in childbirth. David subsequently remarried and had another 13 (?) children.

My mother Lily (Tzpora) was born to Eva and her husband Simon Berger, in Romania, in 1900. (I have a copy of her birth certificate!) She recalled living on the farm with her beloved grandfather David.

My grandparents had three more children after my mother and emigrated to America around 1907. My grandmother had spent the prior year in London living with her uncle (this was about 1905-1906), while awaiting the birth of her third child. Her husband had already gone on to New York. Subsequently, the families on either side of the Atlantic lost touch.

I went to Israel in 1952 to work as an engineer for that summer. My grandmother told me that her uncle Shmuel had made aliyah to Israel around 1880, settled in Petach Tikvah, and instructed me to look up the family. By sheer luck, I met a sabra from Petach Tikvah who remembered Shmuel, and put me in touch with Baruch Marcus, Shmuel's grandson. I then met several of his siblings, including Aaron, Batya, and David. I also met Mervyn Millis while in Israel, and subsequently discovered that we were both studying at Columbia University School of Engineering at the same time!

I also met some descendents of an aunt of my grandmother who had married a Rabbi named Margulis, and lived in Paris.

My grandmother had lived with her aunt after he mother died and until her father remarried and brought her back to Romania.

If you wish, I can give you more information about my grandmother and her offspring. I also have some pictures, including one of Moshe and one of David.

Elna Robbins" - thanks Elna!
