Zeppelin Schwaben Air Mail
In 1912 the Royal House of Hesse sponsored a PostCard Week (from June 10 to June 23) in association with the German Post Office. Special postcards, franked with special semi-official stamps would be carried by the Zeppelin Schwaben up and down the Rhine and Main, over Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Mainz, Offenbach and Worms. The Schwaben, under the command of Dr. Hugo Eckener, flew on June 12, 13, 17, 19 and 22. Below: Special card postally used from DARMSTADT to FRANKFURT in 12 June 1912 /Flugpost am Rhein u. am Main/.
Built in April 1911, the Zeppelin Schwaben would carry a total of 1,153 passengers until it crashed at Düsseldorf and was destroyed by fire after its 234th flight on June 28, 1912.
