"The earliest Jewish community in Bucecea [Romania] possibly dates from 1825. The 1831 Census registered 98 Jewish inhabitants and that from 1899 registered 112 Jewish inhabitants. The 1930 Census registered 848 Jewish inhabitants. The Jewish community probably was Orthodox, Hassidic, and Sephardic. The cemetery is located at Soseaua Principala no. 1, Bucecea, Moldavia region, 2 km from Botosani and is easily accessed. Three rabbis are buried in a separate locked building inside the inactive cemetery. The last known Jewish burial was in 19451." -- courtesy of JewishGen.org [Bucecea]

Mail from Robert Zavos, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, USA (September 22, 2009):
"My family is from Bucecea (and Botosani). I visited the Bucecea cemetery in May 2008 and have found a few inconsistancies with your data.
For example, the Bucecea cemetery I found is about 2 km East of Bucecea and at least 15 to 20 km from Botosani. The last burial was not 1945 but 1975. So are there two Bucecea cemeteries or do you just have old/incomplete data ? About 652 records from the Bucecea cemetery I visited have been loaded on JOWBR within the past several years but not fully analyzed. I believe there is a Romanian professional researcher (MM) who had something to do with this.
There are a number of other Bucecea issues and potential research options now that the Romanian archives are much more open. Are you or anyone else in Israel interested in joint reseach collaboration? I know of about 3 other Bucecea researchers in the USA and 1 in Canada."
